Dr. Raquel De Sousa
My beekeeping endeavours in Portugal awoke my interest to pursue a PhD focused in honey bee biology. I first enrolled in a PhD Program (GABBA, Universidade do Porto, Portugal) that paved the opportunity to engage my research aims in Wright’s Lab, previously at Newcastle University (UK). During my PhD, I studied the behavioural regulation of intake and feeding preferences of mineral salts in adult worker honey bees. I am especially interested in understanding nutrient perception and intake, its effects on bee cognition and nutritional regulation. I have a BSc in Applied Biology from the Universidade do Minho (Braga, Portugal), a MSc in Toxicology and Ecotoxicology from the Universidade de Aveiro (Aveiro, Portugal), and conducted research in the Faculty of Sciences of Universidade do Porto (Porto, Portugal) before commencing my PhD in the UK.
